Emmanuel is the county seat of Emmanuel County, West Virginia, located in the central Appalachian region of the United States. Known for its historic churches, unusually high number of practicing attorneys per capita, persistent fog, and controversial correctional industry, Emmanuel has been described by tourism boards as “a hidden mountain community with deep roots,” and by at least one anonymous travel reviewer as “a place that looks at you first.”

HISTORY
Emmanuel’s founding is traditionally traced to early Appalachian settlers, immigrant families, folk practitioners, religious dissenters, and industrial speculators who established competing claims in the region during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Local histories frequently reference several founding families, including the Hestons, Schermerhorns, Melsandes, and Therosians, though the precise role of each family remains a matter of dispute.During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Emmanuel grew around timber, coal transport, courthouse commerce, and prison labor contracts. Its expansion stalled during the mid-twentieth century but later resumed following the construction and expansion of the Emmanuel Supermax Correctional Complex.
